Description of Animoto

Animoto is a web 2.0 tool that can be found at http://animoto.com/. Animoto allows users to take their miscellaneous jumble of photos, videos, and music and turn that hodgepodge into cohesive, beautiful, and brilliant videos. Once a video is created, sharing is a breeze, which is awesome because why spend the time being creative if no one can bask in your glory? This tool has been tested and proven wonderful by a sundry of credible corporations, which allows them to charge for the product (but have no fear; there is a free version).

Animoto contains excellent features to aid the user in creating boss videos. First off, they have themes from which to choose. Need romantic? Check. Funny? Check. Dramatic? Yep. A user can find most anything from subdued to showy. Next, what is a video without music? Choose from Animoto's selection or upload a music file for the background. Of course, who wants YouTube commentators leaving the dreaded "240p... We meet again" comments? No one. With Animoto, a user has the options of 320p (great for social media), 480p (a nice burn-to-dvd quality), and 720p (What? HD!). The feature that makes Animoto wonderful is that the program makes the editing and transition choices for you! No more slaving in iMovie. I'm not sure how the technology works, but I am guessing it is part magic and part nerd. And part caffeine.

For most users, the decision maker when choosing which tools to dedicate themselves to comes down to price. Animoto offers three standard packages: Lite, Plus, and Pro. With Lite, the user can create unlimited thirty second videos, choosing from 600 songs and basic themes. By paying $2.50 a month for Plus, users get all the benefits of Lite, plus they can create full-length videos and download them for viewing or burning pleasures. The Pro setup allows access to even more theme styles, licensed music, unbranded videos, and priority customer service. Who wouldn't want to feel special for a mere $249 a year? Aside from these packages, those sneaky buggers have a menu tucked away with specials for businesses, photography, real estate, charity/non-profit, and.... EDUCATION!

Constraints of Animoto

  • Pro version seems overly expensive for what it offers
  • Too easy to break copyright law
  • Privacy/Digital Privacy issue when sharing
